WAYS TO SUPPORT ORANGE SHIRT DAY
Wear an orange shirt to show your support for those in the Native community. Support those who did not escape the enduring impact of the trauma. Communities across the United States and Canada commemorate Orange Shirt Day by hosting memorials, candlelight vigils, and walks. Speakers offer a historical perspective to raise awareness.

Wear Orange on September 30
Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 when Phyllis (Jack) Webstad began telling the story of her first day at residential school near Williams Lake when her shiny new orange shirt, bought by her grandmother, was taken from her as a six-year-old girl. The annual Orange Shirt Day on September 30 opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of residential schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of residential schools and the legacy they have left behind.
“Wearing orange symbolizes the loss that we have gone through, it symbolizes the rage and anger we have felt from losing our children and having families torn apart,” Maffioli explains. “But orange also symbolizes hope, the truth and reconciliation that we can bring into our communities. What Indigenous people went through was genocide and people may think that it was in the past, but it still impacts Indigenous populations. We need to work together to make this better.”
With her design now an important part of the local truth and reconciliation journey, Maffioli is honoured to play a small role in deeper understanding.
“It makes me feel hopeful,” she says. “I have a lot of hope with our generation and the awareness we have of our Indigenous culture. There is still change that needs to be made, but I have trust in our youth, in our students and in our education that we will be able to make that change for the better.

ORANGE SHIRT DAY
The phrase"Every Child Matters"stems from a significant Canadian movement to address the enduring trauma and systemic inequalities Indigenous children face due to the legacy of residential schools. The story is rooted in the experience of Phyllis Webstad, who had her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school, a symbol of the broader suppression of Indigenous culture and identity."Every Child Matters" is the message behind Orange Shirt Day, observed on September 30th, which aims to raise awareness, honor residential school survivors and their families, and promote reconciliation by acknowledging that all children deserve respect and opportunity.

Behind Every Number, a Lost Child
Over 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families and forced into Canada’s residential school system – a system built on erasure, pain, and loss.
Many never came home.
In 2021, the remains of 215 children were uncovered at the site of a former residential school in British Columbia, shocking the nation and awakening a painful truth. Since then, over 1,700 unmarked graves have been discovered at or near seven former residential schools across the country.
These are not just numbers – they are children, stories, and futures that were stolen.
On September 30, we wear orange to remember them, to honor the survivors, and to commit to truth, justice, and reconciliation.
Together in Orange: Honoring Every Child
A simple orange shirt.
A powerful message of truth, healing, and hope.
Every year on September 30th, we wear orange to honor Indigenous children who were taken from their families and placed in residential schools. The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of identity, culture, and childhood - but it also represents the strength and spirit of those who survived.
In this photo, you'll see the heart of the message: smiling faces, united in orange, standing together in solidarity and awareness.
Whether you wear your shirt to remember, to learn, or to show support - you are part of a growing movement toward justice and reconciliation.
🧡 Every child deserves to be seen, heard, and loved. Every child matters.
